Letter from John:

I was born on the 13th December 1979 at the hottest time of the day under a big umbrella tree (Acacia Tortilis) in Laikipia . I am a Maasai by tribe, the most famous of Kenya's tribal groups with a formidable reputation as warriors and a glamorous appearance with a red ‘shuka' and significant ornate bead work. My wife is a Kenyan Somali, the largest of all the pastoralist groups. I attended Il-Polei Primary School from 1986 - 1994 before joining Dol Dol Secondary School from 1995 - 1998. Later on, I joined Amboseli Institute of Hotel and Travel for my tour guiding and administration course and environmental studies. Within the same period, I enrolled with the Kenya Red Cross for a standard course in occupational first aid. I first worked with Abercrombie and Kent (A & K) Safaris, giving lectures on Maasai history and traditions to guests around camp fires during camping trips. Afterwards, I joined Laikipia Predator Project, established in 1998 in order to explore the ecology and conservation of African Predators that conflict with man, with emphasis on finding practical alternatives to the ‘killing' of problem predators. In the year 2002, I moved to Loisaba Wilderness, a primate concession to start my guiding techniques. This was where I realized that guiding is about an honest enjoyment of the bush and all the facets of nature. Its also about a genuine enjoyment of people and communication; its about teaching people about the bush, creating an experience and a holiday they will not forget. For five and a half years as a resident guide in Loisaba, I decided to move to the Maasai Mara , Kenya's finest game viewing area to work with Kicheche Mara Camp. in 2006, I moved to Sunworld Safaris which has been my dream safari company for a long time.

Besides soccer and reading, my best hobby is guiding people especially on walking safaris which I believe is the best way to be close to nature. I must also say that I got all the inspiration of walking from my late grandfather, whom I am most grateful for the practical knowledge on the art of tracking, dropping and medicinal plants. More so, I also count myself fortunate to be doing what I dreamt of doing in my life. Not many people get to do what they wanted but I am glad. I love my job, that is the most important aspect of my life!
