Letter from John Mwangi:
I am a Kikuyu by tribe and a family man,
married with two sons. I was born along the slopes of Ngong hills in 1973. My
tourist interest started when I was a small boy as I was herding with my
grandfather at Ngong hills. He was the first man to work with Karen Blixen in
her farm as a guard in charge of protecting the wildlife from poaching. He
taught me a lot about fauna and flora from a tender age.
I further developed this interest when
joining Wildlife Clubs of Kenya in secondary school. For 4 years I was a leader
in this organization in my age group. Keen on making my enthusiasm a
profession, I then enrolled for a course in mechanics at the Nairobi
Polytechnic and acquired a certificate in mechanical craft. Having basic
knowledge in mechanics proves to be an important factor in my work as a safari
guide.
I later on also attended French classes and
courses for tour guiding at the Alliance Francais working with French clients
for a while. I then obtained the KPSGA bronze badge recently in order to show
my qualifications as a tour guide.
Being in the tourism industry for about 8
years now I continue learning and studying about all that Kenya and East Africa
has to offer. Having joined SUNWORLD SAFARIS in 2001 has given me a good
opportunity to learn more about wildlife, culture and about people in general.
