The reserve gets its name from the river ending in the Indian Ocean at Dodori Creek. It was established in 1976 and is situated on the northernmost corner of the Kenyan shoreline. It shares its border with the Boni Reserve.

It covers an area of 877 sq km and preserve a breeding ground for the East Lamu Topi, pelicans and with other birdlife. The riverbanks are breeding grounds for the green turtles and the dugongs.

Besides its large different species of birds, the reserve is also famous for its large Topi population.

There is no accommodation in this park.
