This is an ongoing story where Sunworld Safaris & Mara Bush Camp have been trying to get sick lions treated in conjunction with the vets from David Sheldrick's and the rangers in Masai Mara.

During a morning safari Sunworld Safaris Guide Peter Kamau and his passengers spotted a lioness with 3 little cubs. Those cubs and her mother were suffering  from "Mench".  A disease which comes from the dogs of the cattles. Animals which have Mange loose their hair and scratch a lot. It spreads over to other animals by contact.

After several calls Peter Kamau finally got contact to the vet of the David Sheldrick Trust. The vet offered help.
Today after an early wake up we waited 4 hours in front of the little family which took place close to Smelly Crossing. At around 10 am the vet and his crew arrived, joined by 2 local rangers and the KWS. At that time the lioness had already left her cubs to go hunting. The cubs were hiding in a bush.

Then the hunting started. The cubs got aware of the crew and quickly run away to the other side of the river. After a hunt in the bush the first cub ( we called it Paul) was caught and treated by the crew. Paul was the cub which suffered most of that disease and was not in a good condition.

Then the search went on. Hard to find 2 well hidden little cubs. Now we are having a break, but the search will go on in the afternoon.
 
Then we made a break, because they were still hiding.

In the afternoon the search went on, but still no sign. At around 6 pm we found Peter, Paul and Hermann close to the place where their mum had left them. The cubs layed on top of a termite hill. Still very frightend and shocked. No sign of their mum. The youngsters were hungry and on their own since 9 am. But at least they found each other . Let`s hope that the lioness will come back soon.

Next morning after a cold night with heavy rain we went out of the Mara Bush Camp  early to find the little family. But no sign of Peter, Paul, Hermann and their mum. We hope that they are together again and save.  Looking forward to see them grown up at our next trip to the Maasai Mara.


P.S.: Latest news:  The lioness and the cubs are found and Aliya Habib, Mara Bush Camp Manager, is in contact with the vet that the litte family will be treatend
