Boma Rescue Center - Safari for street children E-mail
The second annual Charity trip for Street children took place on the 15.11.2011. Children from Boma Rescue Centre were sponsored by Sunworld Safaris to participate in a day trip to Lake Nakuru National Park.  48 children aged between 7- 17 were invited to take part in the trip. Most of these children are still undergoing rehabilitation at the rescue center after being picked from the streets where they were either sniffing glue or looking for a living by sorting out garbage at the dumping sites. The Rescue center doesn’t offer accommodation for the children but instead they look for willing families to house them for the night. During the day they stay at the rehabilitation center.

Safari with the kids from the "Boma Rescue Centre"

The pupils were picked for the trip from the rehabilitation center early morning and then started their journey through the famous Tea and Coffee Plantations in Limuru, the outskirts of Nairobi. They had a brief stop in Limuru for an explanation on the Green House farming. Thereafter they proceeded through the breathtaking Great Rift Valley with a brief stop- over at the view point. It was such rare opportunity for the children, most of whom had never had a chance to travel beyond the slum area where they live.

On arrival, the pupils had a 45 minute lecture at the Kenya Wildlife Service Education centre with special emphasis on the importance of wildlife and conservation. The KWS educationist had to make the information as simple as possible since most of the children have never had formal education, while others are still recovering from the effects of drugs and traumatizing life in the streets. After the lecture, the kids went on their first game drive in the Park.

During the trip we provided boxes of juice and crisps to the kids which they really appreciated!

happy kids

Lunch at Flamingo Hill Restaurant was a definite highlight for the children! An extraordinary experience as such, as normally one simple meal at the Rescue Center courtesy of what they are used to. After lunch they had a chance to look around at Flamingo Camp including a visit to the swimming pool and the massage parlour. Thereafter they went on the last game drive before starting their journey back to Nairobi. The children were stunned by the magnificence of their country and the number of wild animals which they had never seen before. Mr. Wandera the Coordinator together with 5 social workers expressed their gratitude on behalf of the Rescue Center School to Sunworld Safaris for organizing such a wonderful trip.
