I traveled to the Masai Mara Game Reserve from 13th to 27th September with a relatively substantial group of 14 Photographers distributed in different vehicles. We encountered leopards, lions with2-3 months old cubs, Cheetahs with cubs barely 6 months old which were suckling, Black backed Jackal with young ones, Serval cat and a bat eared fox, just to mention a few. During our stay Masai Mara offered us almost its entire array of outstanding wildlife. The highlight of this photo Safari was the migration of the large herds of wildebeest. Shortly before we commenced our journey to Kenya, we had been informed of an early start of the annual great migration of wildebeest & zebra from Serengeti to the Masai Mara. Some spectacular river crossings were witnessed by various other photographers who had visited Kenya in July / August. The great migration had started 4-6 weeks earlier than usual and we were a bit worried IF we would indeed manage to get similar experiences. But our worries were uncalled for, the vast savannah along the Talek Mara river was full of wildebeest just waiting for the appropriate time to start the river crossing. The participants saw a river crossing which I have never seen in any of my previous visits. The animals jumped down from a 10 metre high cliff down into the river. Some rolled and somersaulted the last meters in to the river where the crocodiles were waiting for the already hurt animals. It was a sensational and fascinating at the same time. We discussed the day’s experiences in the new, cozy and well furnished Mara Bush Camp Bar over a glass of Beer. Here one can relax and go through the days experiences in silence or chatting away at the cozy camp fire. We had sufficient charging points in the tents for the many Batteries, Laptops and the computer storage facilities as compared to the previous years. The two days we spent at Lake Nakuru towards the end of the Safari gave us some time to rest and photograph animals such as the Reticulated Giraffe, herds of Buffalo and an amazing variety of birds and flamingoes that were waiting for us. Quite unfortunately though, the flamingoes we not present in large numbers like the previous year. But that’s expected in nature and this is what makes nature and wildlife photography attractive, everything is unpredictable & exciting every day. Lastly I would like to thank the entire Sunworld Team in Vienna, Nairobi as well as the Mara Bush Camp for the smooth organization and its very friendly & efficient team. Special thanks also to the guides who tirelessly tried to find us the desired motives.
